HIV TESTS

CD4 AND VIRAL LOAD TESTS

The CD4 cell count is a measure of the number of disease-fighting cells in your blood. Viral load is the amount of HIV virus in a patient's blood. These 2 measurements are very important because they help the doctor to gauge how healthy a patient is and how well their HIV medication is working.

CD4 Cell Count Test
When one becomes infected with HIV, the virus invades a type of white blood cell (cells that help your body fight off infection and disease) called CD4. The CD4 cell count measures the number of CD4 cells in patient's blood, and is a good indicator of the overall health of the patient and how the HIV is progressing. The lower the CD4 level, the more at risk the patient may be for infections.
The test also can indicate how well the patient is responding to current treatment; low CD4 counts may indicate that the antiretroviral medications are not working. Healthy adults have CD4 cell counts ranging from 500 to 1450 cells/mm3: count of less than 500 mean that the immune system is damaged. If the CD4 count is below 200, that means the HIV has progressed to AIDS.
CD4 testing should be done every 3 to 4 months at patient's regular check up.

LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS

VIRAL LOAD TEST
Viral load test is a measure of the amount of HIV in a patient's blood. This test can tell how well a patient is responding to the treatment and assess their chances of contracting new infections.
People living with HIV can have viral loads ranging anywhere from 1000 copies/ml of blood to 1 million copies/ml. Someone with a high viral load has a low CD4 cell count.
If a patient's viral load is greater than 30,000 copies/ml, the doctor may recommend antiretroviral therapy. A goal of this type of therapy is to reduce the viral load to the point where it is undetectable.
Viral load testing should be done every 3 to 4 months.
